The history...In1896 a Brisbane woman, Jessie Jackson, together with her husband, a Brisbane Water Board executive and their sons, began Jackson Furs from their home in South Brisbane. Tanning and dressing furs under their house, Jessie was to become the business name and sole owner because her husband, as a government utility employee was not able to own a private company. As the story would go, they would walk the North Quay wharves selling the furs to the ship passengers on the cruise liners which had arrived in port at Brisbane City. Remaining a Jackson family business until the 1960’s, a Melbourne family together with business partners took over and it was a fashion force with up to 3 stores in the city for many years. In 2004, Jackson came back into the hands of a Brisbane family and Jackson Furs now moves and shakes with a modern twist from the stoic firm it once was. |

Environmentalism. |

The fur industry took it on the chin when the media hype brainwashed the public into thinking they should never wear or use fur again. Many families were forced to close their businesses. The truth of it is that the ecological balance couldn’t be restored by stopping the use of fur. There would come about a different imbalance. Pest animals who are predators or create land damage, whose fur had been accepted in the past became useless waste. They would have to be culled and therein lies the tragedy. There became no use for the product of these animals. Without the need for the fur, there would be so many animals, the authorities would use whatever process they could to affect mass numbers quickly and efficiently. It involves slow torturous deaths. And so they die in vain. The use of fur is essential to global harmony and an ecological balance. There should be no guilt associated with having real fur from well farmed or wild pest animals for 2 reasons. 1 is that the farmed animal is cared for by vets. They have a nourished diet, allowed litters of kits, are medically treated and live longer than if they were in the wild riddled by disease or wounded during the course of their lives. These animals pro create rapidly and vitally, there is no shortage of their species. 2 is that the wild culls are done to keep human communities alive and land protected. Under guidelines, certain numbers are allowed and no more. Without this occurring, crops are decimated overnight by kangaroos, fields are warren riddled by rabbits, and during lambing the ewes are hideously disfigured and left to die by foxes which do not kill to eat necessarily, but out of instinct. There needs to be a market for the use of the culled animals products as all outback folk would know. In freezing climates, there is nothing like fur that will keep us protected from the cold. There is a need for this product and as the civilized fur industry learned a valuable lesson in 1976 by adhering to the global embargo on prohibited imports and acknowledging protected species, continues to use only sustainable product & intelligently managed practices.
